Distinguished guests and all the participants, on behalf of (WELA) the World English Linguistics Association, (KASELL) the Korean Association for the Study of English Language & Linguistics, and (LSK) the Linguistic Society of Korea, I am very honored and privileged to be here to bring this congress to a close, and conclude that we had a wonderful conference with success. We have a final count of 210 participants from more than 20 countries.
We realize all of you had to work very hard during this conference. Not only in 10 plenary sessions but also in all 13 parallel sessions you were a perfect audience for our speakers.
On behalf of the WELA, I would like to first express our sincere thanks to Hanyang University & President Duck-Ho LIM for offering this wonderful venue and all the facilities. And We would like also to express our deep gratitude to the National Research Foundation of Korea, KASELL, LSK, the Foundation Academia Platonica, YBM Sisa, English Mou Mou, Pearson Education Korea, and Hankook Munhwasa for their financial supports.
We opened this 1st World Congress of Scholars of English Linguistics, with a vision and direction for our international networking to share and exchange new findings in English linguistics among scholars from different countries. As Dr. Ik-whan Lee, the president of the WELA, mentioned in his welcoming address, the linguistic theories developed in English have influenced the research trends in other languages. Thus, it is very important to establish promising research goals in English, so that they may be applied to the study of other languages, and this can be done through communication among scholars participating in this Congress. Accordingly, this WCSEL-1 will definitely contribute to setting up some future research goals and methods of English linguistics and general linguistics as well. And we do believe, with the discussions and active participation of each of you over the past five days we are well on our way to realizing this vision.
Once again, on behalf of the WELA, and as the president of LSK, I am happy to report that we are very pleased with the outcome of this WCSEL-1 Congress. All the presentations and discussions made during this WCSEL-1 congress were very informative and enlightening. Hence, we would like to express our warmest thanks to all the speakers, the moderators, and each one of you for your active participation and significant contribution to WCSEL-1 Congress.
Particularly we would to express our special thanks to our invited scholars, professor Thomas Cable, professor Diana Archangeli, professor Tania Kuteva, professor Steve Wechsler, professor Danilo T. Dayag, professor Haihua Pan, professor Ken-ichi Takami, professor Jiun-Shiung Wu, professor Jun-Eon Park, and professor Jae-Il Yeom. for their wonderful, inspirational talks. Let’s give them a big round of applause.
And we would like to express our heartful thanks to Professor Ik-Hwan Lee, President of WELA, Professor IL-Kon Kim, President of WCSEL-1, and Professor Young-Se Kang, Vice-President of WELA, Professors Ki-Jeong Lee & Hye-Kyung Kang, Co-chairs of the LOC, Professor Jin-Hyung Kim, Editor-in-chief, and Professor Sung-Ho Ahn, Secretary-General of the LOC, and all members of the Local Organizing Committee, who have made every effort for the success of WCSEL-1 congress. Without their dedication, this conference would not have been possible. Let’s give them another round of applause.
But our special thanks should be given to all and each one of you. You are the one who made this conference of great success. So let’s give a big delightful hands for all of you. And personally I would like to express my personal sincere thanks to Professor Hey-Kyung Kang, co-chair of the LOC. What she has done for the WCSEL-1 Congress is beyond my expression. I personally believe Professor Kang is the one who gets all the credits. Let’s give her a hearty applause.
And last, I would like to express our special thanks to Hanyang university graduate and undergraduate students, who did a great job as assistant staff members. Without their help, we could not make this conference successful. Please come all assistant staff to the stage. As a slight token of our gratitude, we provide a gift of money. These students are the future Korean English linguists, and they are, in fact, the future of WELA congress. Let’s give them really hearty big hands for their excellent job!
This is our closing ceremony but I hope this closing will not be the end but the beginning of our concerted efforts on setting a good foundation for the WELA visions and goals.
Once again, I would like to thank all and each of you for your active participation. Millions of thanks! And I hope to see all of you again in five years. I wish you a safe and pleasant journey back home to your country! May God bless you! Thank you so much.
