Alice Deignan is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Applied Linguistics at the University of Leeds. She began her career as an English Language Teacher and still works with language teachers. She gained her PhD on the use of corpus methods to explore metaphor theory from the University of Birmingham. Her research uses corpora to investigate language in use, especially figurative language. She is the author of ‘Metaphor and Corpus Linguistics’ (John Benjamins, 2005), and co-author, with Jeannette Littlemore and Elena Semino, of ‘Figurative Language, Genre and Register’ (forthcoming, 2013, Cambridge University Press). She has also published a number of book chapters and journal articles on metaphor and metonymy.

In the first of these, cognitive linguistics, metaphor became recognised as central to thought and pervasive in language. In corpus linguistics, rapid technological developments enabled researchers to study vast collections of texts very quickly, using specialised software. This led to a review of our understanding of language structure, and researchers realised that for English, at least, the organisation of words is perhaps more important than grammar in shaping text. These two developments have come together in the corpus study of metaphor. Corpora have enabled us to test the predictions made by cognitive linguists about language, and have led to a more detailed and complex picture of how we use metaphor. The goal of this one-day workshop is to provide a discussion forum for researchers, who have an interest in metaphor, corpus linguistics, or both, to present their recent findings, exchange ideas and address new questions in the field. Confirmed Invited Speaker: Alice Deignan (University of Leeds, author of Metaphor and Corpus Linguistics) This workshop is sponsored by the English Language and Literature Association of Korean (ELLSK, http://www.ellak.or.kr) and to be held as part of the 2012 ELLSK International Conference from December 11 through 14 at the same venue, Busan, Korea. Call for Papers: We invite submissions of abstract for this one-day workshop with reference to any empirical and theoretical issues concerning metaphor and/or corpus linguistics. Anonymous abstracts should be a maximum of one page in length, including examples, figures, tables, and references. Each paper will be given 20 minute presentations and 10 minute discussion. Online Submission to the EasyAbstracts System: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/wsmetaphor Submission deadline: August 31, 2012 Notification: September 15, 2012 Workshop: December 11 (Tuesday), 2012 |
